Your Ultimate Guide to Mini Splits: Choosing the Right System for Your Home

Mini splits are becoming increasingly popular as a versatile and efficient way to cool and heat your home. They offer a number of advantages over traditional window AC units and central air conditioning systems, making them a great choice for a variety of applications.

What is a Mini Split?

A mini split is a ductless heating and cooling system that consists of two main components: an outdoor unit and an indoor unit. The outdoor unit houses the compressor and condenser, while the indoor unit houses the evaporator coil and blower. The two units are connected by refrigerant lines that carry the cooled or heated air.

Mini splits come in a variety of sizes and capacities, measured in British thermal units (BTUs). The most common sizes are 9,000 BTU, 12,000 BTU, 18,000 BTU, and 24,000 BTU. The size you need will depend on the size of the space you want to cool or heat.

Types of Mini Splits

There are several different types of mini splits available, each with its own advantages and disadvantages. Here are a few of the most common types:

  • Wall-mounted mini splits: These are the most common type of mini split. They are mounted on the wall, high up near the ceiling. Wall-mounted mini splits are a good option for cooling or heating a single room.
  • Floor-mounted mini splits: Floor-mounted mini splits are similar to wall-mounted mini splits, but they are installed on the floor instead of the wall. Floor-mounted mini splits are a good option for rooms with limited wall space.
  • Ceiling cassette mini splits: Ceiling cassette mini splits are installed in the ceiling and distribute air evenly throughout the room. They are a good option for large rooms or rooms with high ceilings.
  • Ducted mini splits: Ducted mini splits are similar to traditional central air conditioning systems, but they use a smaller ductwork system. Ducted mini splits are a good option for cooling or heating an entire home.

Choosing the Right Mini Split

When choosing a mini split, there are a few factors to consider:

  • The size of the space you want to cool or heat: The size of the space will determine the BTU capacity you need.
  • The type of mini split you need: Consider the type of mini split that will best suit your needs and space.
  • The features you want: Some mini splits come with features like Wi-Fi control, multiple indoor units, and variable speed compressors.
  • Your budget: Mini splits can range in price from a few hundred dollars to several thousand dollars.

Using the chart above, select the indoor unit size based upon th square footage of the room you ant to heat or cool. You may want to take a step up in size if: Ceiling Height is over 8', Poor Window Efficiency, Poor Insulation, Kitchen Install (Oven/Stoves), or if allot of people will be gathering in the room.

If you are sizing a multi zone, follow the same process- when completed, add the total BTU for your indoor units, and either select one or two multi zone systems with an outdoor BTU large enough for the indoor combination.

*Always have your HVAC technician confirm sizes before ordering, we cannt be responsible for under or oversized systems.
