Mini Split Air Conditioner Installation: What You'll Need Before You Start

1. The system itself A mini split air conditioner has an outdoor unit and an indoor unit (or several, for multi zone). Check that the box holds what your model includes. Some systems don't come with everything needed to install them.
2. The line set A copper line set carries refrigerant between the indoor and outdoor units. Make sure its length suits the distance between them. Your installer can confirm the right length and size for your model.
3. A way to mount the outdoor unit The outdoor unit needs a stable place to sit. That's usually a wall bracket or a pad. Check the bracket's weight rating against your unit. Some of our brackets are rated to 550 lb.
4. A drain line, and maybe a pump The indoor unit makes condensation that has to drain away. A drain line can do this if the drain can run downhill. If it can't, a condensate pump moves the water uphill or farther away. A float switch can also shut the system off if water backs up.
5. A line cover A line cover hides the line set along the outside wall and protects it. It also keeps the install looking neat.
6. Power and surge protection Your unit has specific electrical requirements. Check these in the product details and have a licensed electrician or HVAC professional confirm them. A surge protector is a worthwhile extra.
7. A licensed installer We recommend hiring a licensed HVAC professional. Our Installation page has more.
