This Cooper & Hunter 5-zone package delivers Energy Star-certified efficiency at 23.4 SEER2 with an R410a refrigerant system — the most widely available refrigerant with the broadest contractor support across the US. Is R410a being phased out?

R410a is being phased down (not immediately banned) under current EPA SNAP regulations. New equipment sales of R410a residential systems will be restricted starting in 2025 under certain thresholds, but existing R410a systems can continue to be serviced and R410a refrigerant remains available. This system is a compliant option for current installations, especially in commercial and multi-zone contexts where R410a tooling and expertise are most available.

What is the minimum total BTU I need for 5 zones?

Add up the BTU requirements of each room you're conditioning. As a rough guide, 500–600 BTU per square foot of living space is a starting point, then adjust for climate, insulation, and window exposure. The 48K BTU outdoor unit included supports combined indoor loads up to approximately 52,000–57,000 BTU with typical multi-zone oversizing. Upgrade to 55K for larger homes.

Can I add a hyper heat outdoor unit to this package?

Yes — use the outdoor unit dropdown above to select a CH-HPR hyper heat outdoor unit. This upgrades minimum heating temperature from -13°F to -22°F. The indoor units are compatible with both the standard MES and hyper HPR outdoor units.

The real triumph of this system was getting it installed in our detached backyard workshop and guest suite setup. Because the outbuildings sit a good distance from the main house where the outdoor unit is mounted, we had to trench and run extra-long line sets across the yard to hook everything up. It was a ton of heavy digging and meticulous planning to make sure the refrigerant lines traveled safely underground, but now both spaces get flawless, immediate climate control without needing a second noisy compressor taking up yard space.

All true, but there are critical technical details and long-term ownership realities almost nobody tells you before you buy.

Beyond washing your mesh air filters every few weeks, mini splits need a deep chemical cleaning of the internal blower wheel and evaporator coil every 1–2 years. Because the heads recirculate the air in your living space, neglected moisture can breed toxic black mold inside the barrel fan. And while most guides cover summer condensation draining from the indoor head, heat pumps reverse in winter: during freezing weather the outdoor unit sheds gallons of water in defrost cycles — without a base pan heater or proper drainage that runoff freezes solid, destroying fan blades and icing the compressor base.

Finally, budget for electrical and warranty requirements upfront.
