Flush-it (often stylized as Flush-It) is a chemical solvent system designed specifically for cleaning the internal copper line sets of HVAC and refrigeration systems. It is most commonly used during a "burnout" (when a compressor fails and acidic sludge contaminates the lines) or when retrofitting an old R-22 system to use R-410A refrigerant.

Below is the essential technical and safety information for using this type of cleaner on copper pipes.

1. Purpose and Compatibility

  • Contaminant Removal: It is formulated to dissolve and flush out carbon deposits, acid, moisture, and old refrigeration oil (mineral oil) that can damage new compressors.

  • Material Safety: It is safe for copper tubing. However, it is a powerful solvent and should never be run through the compressor, expansion valves (TXV), or filter driers. These components must be bypassed or removed before flushing.

  • Residue: High-quality flushes like Flush-It are designed to be "non-residual," meaning they evaporate quickly and completely when purged with nitrogen.

2. Standard Operating Procedure

To clean copper lines effectively, follow these steps (professional HVAC tools are required):

  • Step 1: Isolation: Disconnect the line set from the indoor evaporator coil and the outdoor condensing unit. You want to flush only the copper pipe "run."

  • Step 2: Injection: Attach the canister to the liquid line. Inject the solvent in short bursts (usually 3–5 seconds).

  • Step 3: Soak Time: Allow the solvent to sit in the pipes for a few minutes to break down hardened sludge or "varnish."

  • Step 4: Nitrogen Purge: This is the most critical step. Use high-pressure dry nitrogen (regulated to about 150 PSI) to push the solvent through the pipe.

  • Step 5: Verification: Continue purging until the solvent exiting the pipe is clear and no longer contains oil or debris.

3. Critical Safety Precautions

  • Pressure Hazards: Never exceed the pressure limits stated on the canister (usually 200 PSI). If using nitrogen to "push" the flush, ensure your regulator is functioning correctly; an over-pressurized canister can burst.

  • Ventilation: These solvents are highly volatile. Use only in well-ventilated areas to avoid inhaling concentrated vapors, which can cause dizziness or cardiac arrhythmia in extreme cases.
  • PPE: Always wear safety goggles and solvent-resistant gloves. If the solvent sprays back into your eyes, it can cause chemical burns.

Environmental Disposal: Do not vent the used solvent into the ground. Collect the "effluent" (the dirty liquid coming out of the pipe) in a sealable bucket and dispose of it as hazardous chemical waste.

4. When to Replace vs. Flush

While Flush-it is effective, industry standards suggest that if a copper line has a severe "hard burnout" (where the oil is black and smells like burnt plastic), or if the line has multiple tight bends where solvent might trap, it is often safer and more cost-effective to replace the copper line set entirely to protect the new equipment warranty.
