No. This is a traditional line-set system with a ducted air handler — brazing, evacuation and charging the refrigerant circuit must be performed by an EPA 608-certified technician, and the ducted side requires sheet metal or ducting work. The Midea warranty also depends on professional installation and online registration via the link in the warranty section above. Like all inverter heat pumps, output declines as outdoor temperature falls. At 5°F outdoor ambient, this system delivers 21,600 BTU/h against a rated 26,000 BTU/h at 47°F — about 83% of rated capacity. It's rated as a primary heat source down to -13°F. A manual J load calculation is the right way to confirm it meets your home's load at design temperature.
The indoor air handler is dual voltage, meaning it can be wired to operate on either a 115V or a 208-230V circuit. That gives your installer flexibility depending on what power is available in your mechanical closet. The outdoor heat pump unit always requires a 208/230V circuit.
The electric heat packages (EHKMC05KN, EHKMC08KN, etc.) are sold separately. They're optional backup heat strips that require their own separate 208-230V power connection. Most cold-climate installations don't need them because the -13°F outdoor unit already provides strong heating, but they can be added if you want a safety net.
The air handler can be installed in four configurations: upflow, downflow, horizontal left, or horizontal right. This lets your installer work with the space you have — attic, closet, basement, or crawlspace — rather than forcing a specific orientation. Your installer will confirm clearances, drain routing, and duct connections for your specific space.
